The 2009 Bike for Tykes event in support of Bloorview Kids Foundation promises to help create a world of possibilities for children with disabilities.

For 4 exhilarating hours on Wednesday, June 24th, the Courtyard at TD Centre will be spinning with excitement as more than 100 teams comprising 400+ individuals take part in the annual stationary bike relay. Monies raised will help children with disabilities achieve their personal best.

Our appreciation goes to everyone - the participants, sponsors and volunteers - who make this event such an outstanding success each year.

We get lots of positive feedback that the event is meaningful and fun, with great music, lots of prizes and teamwork. Every year, we strive to make sure the event gets even better and better.

Yet the best feedback we get is from the children and families who are helped by this event. Since 2000, Bike for Tykes has raised over $900,000 in support of children's charities.

The spirit of this event is captured in the words of one past participant: "I knew it would be a fun event, but seeing the smiles on the faces of the children from Bloorview Kids Rehab made me realize how important it is. Their excitement at cheering us on and their appreciation to us, well, it made it one of the best hours I could have spent."

What is Bike for Tykes?

Bike for Tykes is a one day community fundraising event located in the heart of Bay Street. For 4 hours on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, more than 400 individuals will come together to spin for children with disabilities. Over 100 teams of 4 riders will spin on stationary bikes to upbeat music and be inspired by some of Toronto's leading spin instructors. Pedaling fast or slow, every participant is riding to raise money to help create a world of possibility for children with disabilities.

Where Your Money Goes?

Funds raised from the Bike for Tykes event will support Bloorview’s highest priority needs for children with disabilities and their families. Priority areas include respite care, life skills programming, medical training, innovative research and specialized equipment to ensure that Bloorview is able to continue to help children get the programs and services they need. Your support is greatly appreciated and needed.

No matter what the size of your gift, you are enabling thousands of children from across Ontario, Canada and around the world to turn disability to possibility. For more information on Bloorview Kids Rehab, visit http://www.Bloorview.ca

I’ve Never Done Spinning Before

Spinning is an aerobic exercise that takes place on a specially designed stationary bicycle called (obviously enough) a spinning bike. As you pedal, motivating music plays and the spin instructor talks you through a visualization of a cycling workout: "You're going up a long hill now; you can't see the top yet…" Although you follow the general instructions of the spinning instructor, you are in control when it comes to your pace. You can finish a spin class, regardless of your fitness level, simply by adjusting your pace or the resistance knob on the bike.

If you are a novice rider, click here for a guide to proper bike setup to ensure you have a safe and comfortable ride.
